Start first by whisk the wet ingredients in one bowl and the dry ingredients into a separate bowl. Leave the butter out of this.
Add the butter to the dry ingredients, and mix until small sand like crumbles have formed. This may be easiest with a hand mixer.
Then begin adding the wet ingredients 1/3 at a time, beating between each addition until all are added and a smooth batter has formed.
Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and cook as directed until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let the cake cool completely before removing from the pan and icing with your favorite buttercream. Cover and store at room temperature.
