How to Make Sanding Sugar (Easy Recipe)

Follow a simple tutorial to make your own homemade sanding sugar ideal for decorating cookies, cakes, and cupcakes!

  • 1 cup granulated sugar (201 gm)
  • 1 drop gel food coloring

How to Make Sanding Sugar

  1. Preheat the oven to 250°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 
  2. Add the sugar to the food processor along with one drop of desired gel food coloring. Chrome food processor with sugar inside
  3. Mix on high speed for 30 to 45-seconds. 
  4. Pour the sugar mixture out onto the prepared baking sheet and spread out in an even layer. 
  5. Bake for 10 minutes. 
  6. Let the sugar cool for 15 minutes before using or pouring into a chosen storage container. 

Instructions for Making Without Food Processor

  1. If you don't have a food processor, you can use the Ziploc bag method. 
  2. Pour the sugar into a Ziploc bag. 
  3. Add one drop of gel food coloring to the sugar. 
  4. Seal the bag, removing as much air as possible, then squish the gel until all of the sugar is evenly coated. Sugar with pink color in Ziploc bag
  5. Place a sifter over a medium bowl, and pour the sugar into the sifter.  
  6. Shake the sugar into the bowl, discarding any of the large clumps.  
  7. Pour the sugar onto the prepared baking sheet as mentioned above. 
  8. Bake for 10 minutes and then allow to cool for 15 minutes before using or storing for future use. White bowls of pastel sugar

Notes

For a brighter color, add 3 to 4 drops of gel color to the sugar.
