Classic Slow Cooker French Onion Soup Recipe

A slow cooker French onion soup recipe is ideal for a rich and flavorful soup as a starter for any meal. Set and forget this to cook all day and serve for dinner.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds white onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 5 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup croutons
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese

Instructions

  1. In a 6-quart slow cooker, place the onions, thyme, garlic, bay leaf, butter, olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Stir together. White onions in black slow cooker
  2. Cover with the lid and cook on high heat for 6 to 8 hours, stirring every few hours. The onions should be soft and caramelized. Browned but not burned.
