The Best Ever French Toast Bake

This French toast bake is sure to be a favorite breakfast or brunch recipe on your menu! Delicious sweet bread with a rich custard is baked until golden then topped with powdered sugar, berries, and syrup!

Ingredients

For the Bake

  • 1 loaf brioche bread (20 -24 1/2" slices)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

For Crumb Topping

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Spray or grease a baking dish along the bottom and sides. I used a 10" oval baking dish.
  2. Cut the brioche bread into 1" cubes and spread them evenly over the bottom of the prepared pan and set it aside. bread sliced on white cutting board
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until nicely incorporated. vanilla being poured into milk and eggs in white bowl

  5. Then cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours up to overnight.
  6. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. sugar being poured over brown sugar in white bowl
  7. To this dry mixture, add the chilled butter pieces, and use a pastry blender or fork to blend together into a crumble mixture. white bowl of crumble with butter being mixed in using a fork
  8. Cover this and refrigerate it also for at least 4 hours up to overnight.
  9. Remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature for about 30-minutes. Then preheat the oven to 350°F/175°C.
  10. Sprinkle the prepared crumble over the top of the bread/custard mixture. spoon adding crumble on top of white oval bowl of french toast bake
  11. Bake for 45 minutes until cooked through and golden around the edges. It should be set, and soft, but not liquid or wet.

Notes
