If you’ve ever visited the restaurant, Outback Steakhouse, you have probably had this recipe. The copycat Alice Springs chicken recipe is easy to make, has tons of great flavor, packed with mushrooms, bacon, and topped with cheese. It’s an ideal recipe to make to impress guests when you don’t have a ton of time to get dinner onto the table. Plus, this is a great easy recipe that truly anyone can make no matter their cooking skill set!
Copycat Alice Springs Chicken
The first time I ever ate at Outback Steakhouse, this was the menu item I chose. If you are tired of ordinary chicken breasts, then this is the recipe that is going to change your mind. The sweet and slightly spicy sauce combined with rich and earthy mushrooms turns the chicken into a delicious main dish you will love. Add in cheddar and some crispy bacon and you have an all in one meal that is satisfying for everyone at your table!
Why Is It Called Alice Springs Chicken?
As with most of the menu items at this restaurant, it is named after a town in Australia. Alice Springs is part of the Northern Territory and well known, so now it is associated in the United States with a delightful chicken dish!
What to Serve with Alice Springs Chicken
If you eat this at the restaurant, you will likely be served with a side salad, a baked potato, and some warm toasty bread. You can of course, choose from other options on the menu there which include things like steamed vegetables, mashed potatoes, and rice. In our house, there are a few recipes that are especially good alongside this rather rich main dish. Below are a few of my favorite sides.
- Sundried Tomatoes and Garlic Pasta
- Garlic Parmesan Sauteed Zucchini
- Cheesy Green Bean Casserole
- Mashed Potato Bites Recipe
- Baked Sweet Potato Wedges
- Spinach Mashed Potatoes Recipe
- Cheesy Pull Apart Bread
Is Alice Springs Chicken Keto Friendly?
This recipe is not entirely keto-friendly as listed. You can, however, make this low-carb by simply swapping the barbecue sauce for a sugar-free variety. G.Hughes sugar free barbecue sauce is a great choice to swap in the sauce mixture. That change is all you need to turn this into a keto or low-carb friendly recipe.
For a full meal, you could serve this with keto bacon wrapped Brussels sprouts and Instant Pot mashed cauliflower. A perfect keto-friendly meal! A side of keto bread would also fit to make this feel like a true copycat of the restaurant-style meal.
Can I Make Alice Springs Chicken in the Air Fryer?
You can definitely make this recipe in your air fryer! Just place the chicken into a baking dish that fits into your air fryer. Alternately, you can place parchment paper into the air fryer basket and place the chicken directly onto the paper. If doing that, you will want to watch closely to make sure nothing burns.
When making this in the air fryer, I recommend cutting the cooking time down by 5-7 minutes. Always check the internal temperature of the chicken first for safety before serving.
Can I Use Chicken Thighs Instead of Chicken Breasts?
If your family prefers chicken thighs over chicken breasts, this is a great recipe to substitute those in too. The cook time will vary slightly since chicken thighs tend to be thinner than breasts when boneless and skinless. Cook the chicken for 10 minutes before adding the toppings for an additional 7-10 minutes. As always, verify the internal temperature has reached 165°F internally for safety before serving.
What Are The Best Mushrooms for This Recipe?
Basic white button mushrooms are the best choice for this recipe since they are so easy to find and provide a nice rich earthy flavor. Baby Bella mushrooms are also good choices if easy to find in your market. While you can get creative with other types of mushrooms, this recipe really only needs the traditional mushroom since the flavors of others would be covered by the sauce and cheese and not as prominent or useful in this meal.
- Chicken breasts
- Dijon mustard
- Barbecue sauce
- Cheddar cheese

As mentioned above, using a meat thermometer to determine the internal temperature of chicken is the best way to make sure the chicken is done without over cooking. I highly recommend investing in the ThermoPro TP-16 digital meat thermometer. It has multiple presets and a 40″ mesh cable that allows you to put the end into the meat and leave the base outside the oven to see the temperature as it changes during the cooking process.
