One of the best things about visiting Disney parks has to be the snacks. This copycat Disneyland churros recipe is one of my favorites because it feels like I am back in the park with my family. Follow this easy recipe to create a delicious snack that is perfect alone or for dipping into a rich chocolate sauce.
Copycat Disneyland Churros
This is one recipe that while easy to prepare, can be a bit messy. Making churros means you will be doing some deep-frying and that can cause a bit of mess on your stove or counter. Trust me though, the result is well worth it. You will absolutely love how delicious they are and the little mess will be pretty easy to clean up, especially when you see the smiles on your family's faces!
If you want something a bit easier to make but just as delicious, you might want to try out these white chocolate blondies or even these triple chocolate fudgy brownies with nuts. Both are easy to whip up and toss into the oven and delicious.
Where Did Churros Come From?
The churro originated in Spanish and Portuguese culture. A sweet dough deep-fried and coated in cinnamon and sugar, they come in a variety of sizes and shapes but are all a slightly hollow dough that is delicious and perfect for snacking or sharing. While they may be European in origin, they are also very popular in the Southwestern states, Mexico, and many Spanish-speaking regions.
What are Churros Traditionally Coated In?
Once fried, churros are usually coated in a blend of cinnamon and sugar. Sometimes you will find that the churros in restaurants and food carts also come with dipping sauces like strawberry sauce, chocolate sauce, or caramel cause. There are even varieties that include fillings and one of my favorites happens to be a dulce de leche filled churro.
Why Are My Churros Raw or Doughy Inside?
If your churro is raw or doughy inside it has not been cooked long enough. This happens when the oil is too hot so the outside cooks faster than the inside, or when they are not left in the oil long enough.
The best temperature to cook churros at is 360°F. When deep-frying, you will want at least an inch of oil in your pan and to use a candy thermometer to check the temperature. Make sure you aren't overcrowding the pan so the oil stays close to temperature and cooks at an even rate.
Do I Have to Deep Fry Churros?
No, you do not have to deep fry them. If you want to bake the churros instead, you will need to do so carefully. First, stack two baking sheets together so there is an extra layer so the churros won't burn. Secondly, line the pan with parchment paper. Third, cook for 18-20 minutes at 400°F. Watch closely and cook on the center rack of the oven for best results.
What Oil Should I Use to Fry Churros?
You want to fry in neutral oil. I prefer using vegetable oil or canola oil for deep frying, but some will recommend using peanut oil. All three are good options and can work for this recipe. You can also use melted shortening in a pinch.
Do not fry your churros in butter, margarine, or olive oil.

How to Make Churros Recipe
In a small bowl, combine ½ cup granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon then set aside.
In a heavy bottom saucepan, bring the water, butter, sugar, and salt to a boil on low heat. Boil just long enough to melt the butter. Then add the flour into the mixture.
Stir, using a rubber spatula, just until a thick dough forms.
Pour the dough out of the pan into a bowl, and set aside to cool for 5-minutes.
Using a whisk or the whisk attachment of your mixer, add in the egg and vanilla. Mix until a loose dough forms that resemble a pate a choux. It will be a thick but moist and soft dough that is loose enough to pipe.
Open a piping bag and add the piping tip into the bag and then cut off the end so the dough will easily pipe through. Scoop the dough into the piping bag and set it aside while the oil heats.
In a deep skillet or deep fryer, heat oil to 360°F.
Pipe the dough in 5" to 6" long strips into the hot oil, using a knife or chopstick to cut off the end. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan.
Fry for 3 to 5 minutes per side until golden brown.
Drain the churros on paper towels then toss into cinnamon sugar.
How to Make Chocolate Sauce
In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, bring heavy cream to a slight boil over medium heat.
As soon as it begins to boil, add in the chocolate and vanilla, reduce the heat to low, and stir until the chocolate has melted.
Remove from heat and pour into serving dishes.
Serve the churros with chocolate dipping sauce. Best served when warm.
